Mission

This is a companion website to the book ‘The Death Of Business As Usual’. It promotes inspirational stories, documentary films, tedtalks and podcasts relating to sustainability, as well as stories of disasters and corruption from which we can learn. It includes sustainability references such as performance indicators for measuring progress towards sustainability, certification for sustainability, and various contacts and awareness programs.

The blogs give updates on relevant developments in the progress towards a sustainable circular economy.

History

In 1972, ‘The Limits to Growth’ (1book) was published, summarizing the Club of Rome’s Project on the Predicament of Mankind. There were three key conclusions:

1.If the present growth trends… continue unchanged, the limits to growth on the planet will be reached within the next 100 years. The most probable result will be a rather sudden and uncontrollable decline in both population and industrial capacity.

2.It is possible to alter these growth trends and to establish a condition of ecological and economic stability that is sustainable far into the future. The state of global equilibrium could be designed so that the basic material needs of each person on earth are satisfied and each person has an equal opportunity to realize his individual human potential.

3.If the world’s people decide to strive for this second outcome rather than the first, the sooner they begin working to attain it, the greater will be the chances of success.

Now, 50 years later, the Covid-19 pandemic is giving mankind an opportunity to stop the mad exponential growth, which is very likely to end in conclusion 1, and enable us to focus on conclusion 2. This gives us the opportunity to make a step change to balance what we are taking from mother Earth with what we can give back.
